What does a red lightsaber mean? In the Star Wars universe, lightsabers are weapons that are wielded by both Jedi and Sith. As for red lightsabers, they are often associated with the Sith. This is because red lightsabers are created using crystals that have gone through a process called “bleeding”, which bends the crystal to will of the dark side of the Force. Red lightsabers are also known for being more unstable and harder to control than lightsabers of other colors. As a result, they are often seen as a symbol of anger and aggression.
History of the Red Lightsaber

But who was the first person to use a red lightsaber in Star Wars history? Some believe that it was Darth Revan, a powerful Sith Lord who served as the main antagonist in the game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Others believe that it was Karness Muur, a Dark Jedi who appeared in the Star Wars: Legacy comic series. However, the true answer may never be known. What we do know is that red lightsabers have been associated with the Sith for centuries. It’s just a matter of which narratives and storylines become canon.
What Does a Red Lightsaber mean in Star Wars?
In the Star Wars universe, lightsabers are more than just weapons- they’re also a symbol and representation of the ones who wield them. For the Sith, lightsabers are a physical embodiment of the dark side of the force. They’re aggressive, fearsome, and dangerous, and their crimson blades strike terror into the hearts of their enemies. Darth Maul, Darth Revan, Darth Vader, and Kylo Ren are all well-known for their red lightsabers, and their embrace of the dark side.
However, it’s not just the Sith who wield red lightsabers. Jedi Master Mace Windu is also known for his distinctive purple lightsaber, which he uses to great effect in battle. It’s believed his saber was originally blue, but partially bled due to his connection with the dark side.

What Makes a Lightsaber Red?
So, what makes a lightsaber red? It all has to do with the kyber crystal. Kyber crystals are Force-attuned crystals that have the ability to focus and amplify a Jedi’s power. They are also a reflection of their user. Kyber is naturally resistant to the dark side of the Force, therefore the red color has to be forced upon it in a process called “bleeding”.
In order to make a red lightsaber, the kyber crystal must be “bled.” This means that its dark side user has poured his or her pain, rage, and hatred into it until the crystal essentially submits to its master’s will. Kylo Ren’s saber required that iconic cross guard because his crystal actually cracked during the bleeding process, resulting in an unstable blade. The cross guard serves as vent for the excess energy expelled by the damaged crystal.
The bleeding process amplifies the crystal’s ability to focus on the dark side of the Force, which is why most red lightsabers are wielded by Sith. However, there are a few Jedi who have chosen to use red lightsabers as well.
Can a Jedi Have a Red Lightsaber?
Jedi can use red lightsabers, but tend to avoid this for many reasons. Firstly, because red crystals are require someone to make it “bleed” which warps its connection to the living force and thus its users. Jedi can form a strong connection with their kyber crystal over time. Making a kyber crystal bleed requires you to bend the force against it’s will, going completely against a Jedi’s beliefs in harmony with the Force. Not to mention red crystals channel the dark side more effectively.
While the Jedi Order has no rules against having a red lightsaber, one can see how that would be strongly frowned upon and avoided at all costs. A devout Jedi would be more likely to “purify” a bled crystal before using it.
However, we did have the opportunity to see Obi-Wan Kenobi use a borrowed red lightsaber in bizarre scenario where he found himself unarmed against both Maul and his brother Savage, but was able to borrow a red lightsaber from his former enemy and former Sith, now rogue, Asajj Ventress.
Who Has the Red Lightsaber?
Red lightsabers are most commonly seen with the obvious Sith lords and dark siders like Sidious, Vader, Maul, Dooku, Revan, Nihilus, Savage, Kylo Ren, Asajj Ventress, etc, etc, etc.
However there was an extensive period of time when the Sith were believed to be extinct that is was not so uncommon to see a Jedi wielding a red saber. This fell out of fashion when the Sith emerged from hiding and was clear there were not extinct.
